No one would ever expect an African safari park in Central Europe, but it’s here. It is a tribute to the astonishingly mild climate of Balaton. Endre von Nagy, a Hungarian hunter and explorer, established the Africa Museum and Safari Park. The park also has children’s pony and camel rides, a bufe/restaurant, and souvenir shops. The founder established the museum in 1913. Because of his marriage with Alexandra Hatvany (the Hatvany family was involved in WWII) he was imprisoned in 1944. In 1950 he was released by a new regime.
But, as communism took deeper hold, he fled to Tanzania with his wife, where he established another zoo and animal park. His writings were published internationally, and so influential had he become that four different hunting organizations took on his name after his death. In Tanzania, several schools and a lake were renamed in his honor.
